When I first saw the figure of a tormented Chris Brown yelling the hook in the opening scenes on this video, I thought – Kanye!

But Chris’s emotional performance in the video is more than a copycat one. Hype Williams paints a dark, Matrix-style portrait of a anguished ugly world where its two stars are not afraid of the darkness.

Why Stop Now is the first single and video from Busta Rhymes since he signed with YMCMB records a few months back. Busta is sticking with the same insanely fast-rapping style he used in Brown’s successful Look At Me Now from 2011. And Brown is hanging on to the same bradaggio that make his fans love him.

Drake is ready to take over the month of October. The Young Money Artist dropped his video for Headlines over the weekend. This is one of my favourites of Drake’s to come out in the last while. I love the sped-up , synth-heavy production and Drake’s confident lyrics. Of course the melodies on this song are bananas. Drake must dream of melodies in his sleep, because they are so effortless for him.

Judging from the video, shot in Toronto’s East side, Drake and his OVO crew are preparing to take over in the new year.  The video is directed by Lamar Taylor and Hyghly Alleyne. Drake’s sophomore album titled Take Care drops October 24th, with the Rapper performing on Saturday Night Live on the 15th.

The song is catchy and has more of a ‘radio-friendly’ appeal than his last previous releases. I could see Def Jam standing behind this as an official Single. I am a fan of Jeezy and this being his fourth album, here’s hoping TM103 is worth the wait.

Jay-Z And Kanye West are gearing up for the Rap release of the year: their collaborative album, Watch the Throne. Kanye has been tweeting about this album since he began leaking records from his Dark Fantasy recording sessions late last year. So far, the duo released H.A.M to little (commercial) fanfare. This track, Otis, borrows from the King of Soul himself, Otis Redding and his 1960 record, Try a Little Tenderness.

“Otis” opens with a slowed-down refrain lifted from Redding’s 1966 version of “Try a Little Tenderness.” The musical icon wails, “It makes it easier, easier to bare,” shortly before the piano sample is chopped and reworked. As the bass line is ushered in and the drums drop, Jay shouts out, “Sounds so soulful, wouldn’t you agree?” before tearing into his boastful bars…”

I like this! I like the salute to this throwback artist and I can appreciate the old-school hip hop element to the song. But I coulda used a hook or two in there somewhere.

It whas recently been announced that Lil Wayne woud be a performer at next month’s MYV Video Music Awards. Weezy will perform on the live show taped in Los Angeles, August 28th. Expect Tha Carter IV to drop the next day, August 29th.

Chris Brown wins two Awards at the BET Awards show

Whether you like the song or not, the drunk-dialing anthem has spurred many artists to record their own versions. Fresh off his two wins at the BET Awards, Chris Brown decided to drop his version of Drake’s Marvin’s Room. He takes a different route as he sings from the perspective of the current boyfriend that Drake tries to ‘hate on’. The fact that Chris takes a different approach to the song in of itself makes this a more effective remix.

Chris sings:
He’s just sayin, he can do better (no he can’t, I know he can’t)/
Baby, all I’m sayin’ is he sound like a hater
Baby, he can just walk out and do us a favour (mind ya business)
N*gga stop bein’ a Hater

Also check out Drake’s video for Marvin’s Room. All these remixes make me appreciate the original song. In the video, Drake is shown drinking to the point that leads to the infamous call in front of a blurry, smoky camera lens. Watch the video below.

Christopher Frank Ocean must be feeling pretty good right now. Not only is the buzz for his Mixtape Nostalgia at an all-time high, his relationship with his estranged label, Def Jam is now very much on. They plan to re-release a commercial version of Nostalgia on July 16th. The album’s debut single, Novacane finally gets a video treatment, released today to the Internet. Nabil Elderkin directed the dark, moody clip that finds Ocean trying to keep his focus while clearly trippin off some seriously potent product. Watch below.

This is our first look at Ocean in solo artist mode, but you may have seen in recently in his group OFWGKTA aka Odd Future’s video for She. This is one of my favourite rap videos I have seen this year! It follows Odd Future’s lead Tyler the Creator as he stalks/pursues the pretty girl next door (who Ocean already hooks up with). The video is fresh, youthful and unique; easily one of the year’s best thus far!

“I never liked you n*ggas/who knew one day I’d be just like you n*ggas”

A track that was left on the cutting room floor from the Beautiful Dark Fantasy album sessions, Mama’s Boyfriendwas leaked today to the Internet. The production includes an unidentified sample that literally repeats the line, “Alright you n*ggas” over sped-up vocals and up-beat drums and claps. Kanye raps as his 5-year old self watching in disgust as his mother’s “Old-Spice wearing, short-chain wearin’” boyfriend tries to move in on his territory and his Mother. Later in the song, Kanye realizes he has become that same man as the tables turn and he has to deal with a territorial child while trying to date the child’s mother.  Kanye laments, “When’d I become my mama’s boyfriends?”

Great song!

Brooklyn-based Hip Hop group True To Life have a really good ear for music. The Independent crew made up of 3 Rap artists  has re-mixed Miguel’s haunting interlude, Girl with the Tattoo from his debut album (All I Want is You) and have extended it into a full-length song. Not only is the idea in itself ingenious, it is well executed.  The production is solid and flows effortlessly from the original interlude to the full song. Each rapper ( K-words, Concise, Slangston Hughes and a third unidentified Rapper) reminisce on the haunting memories of an ex-lover neither can forget. Check out the song below.
