Thanks to DJ Hazel Eyez for putting me on to this one.  R&B singer/songwriter Ne-yo wows with his new single, The Way You Move. I forget what a good singer Ne-yo is. His vocals are always just enough for this demure, piano-driven track. He sounds very natural and welcome on the track. Trey Songz steps it up a notch, as expected, speeding up his lyrics, while toning down his yodeling tendancies. The disappointment of the track is the addition of T-Pain. I don’t mind the Autotune, but the subject matter is distracting. Can T-Pain sing about anything besides a Stripper in any of his songs? :/

Moving on, the song will appear on Producer/DJ Boy Wonda’s upcoming Mixtape titled Tough Love.

Verdict: This song reminds me of another ensemble song, Jamie Foxx’s She Got Her Own from a couple years back. This song may suffer the same fate as that song. But I like it now!

Update: The three stars were actually spotted in an ATL at the Diamonds of ATL Gentleman’s Club, shooting scenes for the upcoming video for this  song.

Now to slow things down even more. A new song from Soul singer Anthony Hamilton has surfaced, titled Red Light. The song has Hamilton going against the music; just his vocals and some guitar strings. He successfully carries the song very well with some impressive vocals. You will get drawn into Hamilton’s storied metaphor of either choosing to speed through life or slowing things down.  He sings, “You break the mold when running throught the tolls/ Speedin’ through you whole life”

I like this. Have a listen below.

Verdict: Definitely a laid-back, beautiful song. A good video may make this song even more memorable.

Of all the new jacks on the Hip Hop scene, J.Cole is my favourite (Drizzy too, but I don’t consider him a new Jack). Steady hustling on the Mixtape scene for the longest, the Roc Nation artist is still looking for that ‘big break’. Enter in the “Songs for Women”, as my man Frank Ocean would sing.

I heard Can’t Get Enough earlier in the Summer and I thought it was the perfect Summer track. Enter in a tropical-themed video with a Big Pimpin 2.0 theme AND add a slimmed-down, tanned, Trey Songz? Straight eye-candy for the ladies! Although my man J. Cole looks like he needs to eat a lil’ bit, I’m not complaining Barbados ambassador Rihanna makes a surprise cameo at the video’s end. Loving this!

Last week, Drake dropped Marvin’s Room, another single from his upcoming sophomore disc, Take Care. Something tells me, Drake isn’t worried about a sophomore slump. So far, the music I have heard from his project is pretty dope. Marvin’s Room is more R&B with faded emo lyrics than a typical rap jam, but we all know by now, this is Drake’s steez. In the song, he drunk dials an Ex girlfriend and tells her new man ain’t sh*t and that he still thinks about her. We all been there… Take Care drops on Drizzy’s birthday, October 24th. Take a listen below.

The Verdict: Feeling it now! The Hip Hop heads might not be feeling the transistion, but I think this sound works really well for Drake. I’m sold!

Recommended by Dj HazelEyez,  Lloyd has a new song  called The One featuring Trey Songz and Young Jeezy. Trey steals the show on his verse as he rides the hip hop beat effortlessly. Lloyd croons about wanting to be the one to “kiss you goodnight” while Trey  sings “beat it, I’mma beat it like I never did before”. Jeezy kicks it up a notch on his rhyme and brings a nice flow to the song. Lloyd’s Zone 4 debut album, King of Hearts hits stores July 5th.

The most shocking and startling news I’ve heard today’s has to be the sentencing of Lyfe Jennings by an Atlanta court to 3 and a half years in jail. The verdict results from charges stemming from a 2008 incident in which Lyfe was arrested for evading police arrest and firing a weapon after a scuffle with his ex-girlfriend/manager and mother of his children, Joy.

Lyfe posted this today on his Twitter:

This will be my last post. To everyone who gave me a chance I am forever in your debt. I have had a fabulous career because of you. All I can say in parting is that I have been honest with yaw. I didn’t sugarcoat a word didn’t hold back a single sylible of my life from yaw. I’ve lived a hundred lives in these 6 yrs so I not only won’t, i don’t have the right to complain. I would like to think that I’ve changed lives by changing my own, tho I can’t be sure. But one thing I am sure of is God gives and takes away in measure. He is fair, just and forever. Amen from a man… Smile, its contageous:)

It is a sad situation. Lyfe has come so far after completing a 10 year sentence from an Arson charge, then redeeming himself while in prison and signing a record deal upon his release. I’m a big fan of Lyfe’s music. He released his last album, I Still Believe August 31st with the lead single, Statistic. Sadly, it looks like Lyfe has become a ‘Statistic’ as well.

Watch the Pout!

You have to give it up for Trey Songz. When he first arrived on the scene back in 2005 singing that “I just gotta make it”, he really meant it. Now he is headlining his Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour with Monica and having respected artists like Jay-Z show up at his shows. Trey’s fourth studio album debuted at Number 2 on the Billboard charts, trailing Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns by only 1,000 albums. This reflects Trey’s biggest sales week and his highest debut yet. Congrats to Trey, he definitely has earned and deserved it! And the fact that Bottoms Up was not a major hit record shows that Trey’s fans really showed up and showed out at the record stores. Something has to be said for Trey’s (new) team and its effective guerrilla marketing tactics. #Swoosh!

Soulful singer Bilal has cancelled the Canadian dates of his current Tour, most notably his Toronto concert date that was supposed to commence last night at Revival Nightclub. After suffering a severe asthma attack, Bilal had to be hospitalized in Detroit.

According to the Press release:

Bilal is very disappointed and deeply apologizes to his Canadian fans. Plans are being discussed for a re-scheduled concert in November, and The Main Ingredient and Manifesto are working diligently in hopes to make an official announcement next week.

This was sad to hear. I know I was looking forward to the show. But it will be re-scheduled in the near future and we will post on it when the dates are released.

I saw this video earlier last week but wanted to reserve my opinion on it after a second or third viewing. I never liked this song, even though I love love Nikki’s verse on the track. As you may have noticed by my posts on him, I am gettin a little tired of the msic Trey has been releasing lately. Although I do love his song, Already Taken, his new stuff is too Mr. 106 and Park at times. So Bottoms Up has taken some time to grow on me (still growing). The video, directed by Anthony Mandler is…great! I am loving the dark mood of the video, with the sped up, animated performances from Trey, Nikki and the dancers. I love how there is sex appeal, but masked by the animated effects of the video so it is not too sexy (a lot of videos are pushing the boundaries nowadays). I love the premise of Trey sitting at a peep show with Nikki showin her goods to him in a playful manner. The video is a differnt look for Trey, but a welcome one! Its just the damn song is sooo….blech.

Trey’s Passion, Pain & Pleasure album will be in stores September 14th!

SN: Trey will not get a pass for his R.Kelly-style yodeling at the song’s intro. He will not!! (He still look Good tho!)

John Legend also teamed up with members of the Roots, Common and Canadian beauty Melanie Fiona to re-record the classic Marvin Gaye activist song, Wake Up Everybody. This is not the first time this song has been re-recorded and it certainly will not be the last… I love this video and this version, especially Melanie who steals the show vocally, in my opinion. Its a nice feel-good throwback video. John Legend and the Roots have recorded a collaboration album aptly named the Wake Up! The album will be in stores September 21st.

The first is from Trey Songz for his song,  Already Taken, the first single off the forthcoming Step Up 3 (yes, another one) movie soundtrack. As with most videos associated with this movie series (think Chris Brown’s Say Goodbye), the setting takes place during dance rehearsal at a gritty dance studio. Trey even brought out his beautiful ex-Girlfriend, dancer Helen, to play his lead girl. Very pretty girl, though she didn’t really bring it with the dance moves. The song was produced by Polow Da Don and I’m loving its easygoing cross-over appeal! Trey is looking to release his next album this September so don’t look for him to let up on the new music & videos. Not complainin’ over here! Check the video and more below!

A few weeks back I posted Trey Songz’ remix to Usher’s Lil Freak and questioned how much longer Songz had planned to ride his Freak-A-Leek image. When I heard this latest leaked song, I started to imagine this change in direction may be coming sooner than I thought! In For the Sake of  Love, Trey sings about being willing to do whatever it takes to keep the Love alive between him and his S/O.  This is one of the better songs I’ve heard from Trey in a long time! Trey sings,

” ‘Cuz there is nothing I won’t do/ for the sake of our love…
I’m gonna be a commitment, its one to  say it, but I’m gonna be there – Believe that.“

Wow…is this what happens the Hood gets put on? I pegged K. Michelle as the next to Blow-Pop last year and I still stand behind that. But after dropping by Miss Jia’s page, I found out not only is K. Michelle dating the Pied Piper, R.Kelly himself O_O  she opted to release a Trey Songz diss track to the Internet to defend her man!!

Hmmm K. Michelle definitely went in, I’m actually feelin it though. Hopefully the Trey Stans don’t catch wind of her calling him out. K. Michelle isn’t just going in on Trey, she’s calling out the Industry itself.  K will be ruffling some feathers with this track but for some reason, I don’t smell publicity stunt with this one…

K. Michelle recently released the video to her next Single, Fallen which we will post when we get it. In the meantime, check out her live performance of Fallen in New York City for some Industry heads. I told ya’ll she can blow!

*Sidenote: If K. Michelle and Kellz hit the studio together, can we expect some R.Kelly/Sparkle-type magic that will take us back to the 90s? A girl can dream…
